Half-Birthday Half-Cake

Yes, I realize that celebrating my children's half-birthday makes me the embodiment of all that is wrong with parents in America... or whatever.
But it's so fun! I made this half-birthday half-cake after seeing something similar online.

What You Need:
One boxed cake mix or about 5 cups cake batter
8" round cake pan
6" round cake pan
Chocolate Ganache
Buttercream Icing
Icing Colors
Piping Bags and Tip #7

Bake 1 each 8" and 6" layer cake. (I used about 2 1/2 cups of batter in the 8" and 1 1/2 in the 6" pan.)
Level each cake and cut it in half to create the half-circles.)

Stack the cakes, spreading a thin layer of icing between each layer, and spread a generous coat of chocolate ganache on the cut side.

To make the ganache look like cut cake, crumple up some foil, and gently tap all over the ganache.
Why not just leave it cut? Because if you're not serving it immediately, it will dry out. So, adding the ganache serves two purposes. 1- it's chocolate, the more the better in this house. 2- it keeps the cake from drying out.

Pipe a thick line of icing along the chocolate to simulate the filling.

If you want to simplify the front of the cake, I highly recommend against the multiple colors. Doing the different colors for the sides and tops made for a lot more work and a lot slower work. (But it does look pretty cool, doesn't it?!)

The rope border was made with Tip #7 and two colors. Click the link to see my video of the rope border technique.

I set the table with everything in half.
Halves of fruit, halves of graham crackers, halves of cheese sticks... all only covering half of the plate. I also cut paper plates, napkins and cups in half.
My guys loved all of the half stuff. It was great!
